Zaheeb Ajmal reports:
9:00 a.m.: Shanti Rishi, wife of Shailendra’s uncle (and Harish’s younger brother) Pradeep, is walking by the fields on the eastern edge of Sargana. We exchange greetings. She informs me of having sowed the maize crop on their own land. But it is the land they have leased in from Damodar Rajak about which she is worried.
“I have no cash to buy either seeds or fertilisers for the wheat crop, which I want to sow on that plot. I went to ask [someone whose name I didn’t grasp, and she didn’t repeat] if they could loan me some cash. But he says he can only help me after a few months. What good will that do to me?
“I really need to open a bank account. Without a bank account, all my husband’s income is of no use because he cannot send it to me when we need it.” I tell her the banks are all very crowded because the officials are still dealing with the fallout of the demonetisation policy.
She tells me she will see what she can do and continues walking back to her home in the village.
