7:00 a.m.: Shailendra and I speak on the phone. Shailendra expects to complete the work in Sherpura within a few hours and leave for Beeja by the afternoon. He tells me he will call once they have boarded the tempo for Beeja.
Zaheeb Ajmal reports from Sargana:
8:00 a.m.: Shailendra’s parents’ home is all spruced up for Diwali. Shailendra’s mother tells me that Harish, her husband and Shailendra’s father, has stepped out to the market. Next door, I see Pradeep’s wife Shanti Rishi cleaning the courtyard. We exchange greetings and she informs me that she has already filed her application for a PAN card so that she can proceed with applying for a bank account. She asks me to track the status of her application on the internet: I learn that her application has been successful and that a PAN card has been dispatched. It should arrive any time now, I tell her.
Ankur Jayaswal reports from Ludhiana:
2:00 p.m.: Shailendra calls me on the phone to tell me they have been waiting for a tempo for the last one hour. Perhaps because it is Diwali, he barely sees any tempo plying today, but they will wait nonetheless.
4:30 p.m.: Shailendrs calls to tell me they have still not found a tempo to take them to Beeja. They now plan to travel tomorrow.
