Zaheeb Ajmal reports:
10:15 a.m.: Mahadev Yadav sits by his cycle-repair shop, wearing an orange vest and a colourful pair of shorts. Today is the first day of the Chhath festival, and he plans to offer the Chhath prayers by the ghat (pond) near his house along with his cousin Dinesh Yadav, with whom he has had a long-running dispute.
“Oh- we detest each other. But there is no question of offering the Chhath prayers anywhere else. On this one day each year- the only day- our families stand besides one another,” he tells me matter-of-factly.
